Donor Services (TDS), Mountain Region Donor Services, and Mid-South
Transplant Foundation, the federally designated organ recovery agencies
for the state of Tennessee, are pleased to announce that a new specialty
plate to promote organ donation awareness has been approved for
Tennessee. The recent passage of Senate Bill 2951 amended Tennessee
Code Annotated, Title 55, Chapter 4, and authorized the issuance of the
new license plate. Before the license plate can go into production,
the agencies must obtain signatures and $35 each from 1,000 Tennessee
residents expressing a desire to purchase a donor awareness plate. A
portion of the proceeds from each plate will support local organ donor
awareness efforts in Tennessee. “Over the
years, many people have expressed an interest in an organ donation license
plate,” says Jennifer Kilby, Public Education Manager for TDS. “The
state of Tennessee’s support of this project will enhance our agencies’
efforts to educate the public about the critical need for organ and tissue
donors. We are very grateful to the State for their efforts to help
save the lives of the more than 85,000 Americans currently on the national
organ transplant waiting list,” Kilby adds. According to
the United Network for Organ Sharing, the agency that coordinates the
national organ transplant system, transplantation has saved and enhanced
the lives of more than 300,000 people in the United States. It is
the need for donated organs, which is currently not being met. About
17 people die every day because a donated organ does not become available
in time. To obtain an

"The National Kidney Foundation
organizes the This July, the National Kidney Foundation is conducting its eighth biennial Olympic-style U.S. Transplant Games in Minneapolis-St Paul and the U of MN. The NKF's 51 Affiliates across the US organize teams of athletes who train for any of the 12 sports showcased. The athletes and team organizers raise funds and seek team sponsors to enable them to travel and compete at the Games. Teams increase local community awareness of the need for all organ donations and attract positive media attention on the successes of organ and tissue transplantation. Athletic participation in the Games is open to anyone who has received a transplant of a heart, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas or a bone marrow transplant. The U.S. Transplant Games provide the transplant community the opportunity to honor the extraordinary generosity of donors and donor families. It is these individuals who make transplantation possible by providing the "Gift of Life" to some of the more than 85,000 people who are in need of a life-saving organ transplant. The National Donor Recognition Ceremony, held in conjunction with the Transplant Games, is a special tribute to our loved ones who donated organs or tissues at the time of death. The Ceremony will feature a video tribute to donors, music and readings to honor donors and their families, and reflections from transplant recipients whose lives were changed dramatically from the precious gift of donation. Four families from Tennessee Donor Services will be attending the Games and the Donor Recognition Ceremony.
